What this calculator does
When a pipe has to step around an obstacle, you need the travel, run, and fitting angle to cut it right the first time. This app does the offset trigonometry for any fitting angle, so there is no guesswork at the saw.
The offset relationships
- For a 45° offset: travel = offset × 1.414, and run = offset (they are equal).
- For a 22.5° offset: travel = offset × 2.613, run = offset × 2.414.
- For a 60° offset: travel = offset × 1.155, run = offset × 0.577.
Worked example
To clear a 10-inch obstruction with 45° fittings: travel = 10 × 1.414 = 14.14 inches between fitting centers, with a 10-inch run. The app also subtracts fitting take-off so you cut to the exact face-to-face length.

Why is the 45° constant 1.414?
It is the square root of 2. With equal-leg 45° fittings the run and offset are equal, and the diagonal travel between them is the offset times the square root of 2.
Does it handle other angles?

Does it account for fitting take-off?
Yes. It subtracts the fitting take-off so the number you get is the actual cut length between fitting faces, not just the center-to-center travel.
