What this calculator does
This app counts wall framing — studs, plates, and openings — for a wall of any length at 16 or 24 inch on-center spacing, so your material order matches what you'll actually build per IRC R602.
How it works
- Studs = wall length ÷ spacing + 1, plus extra studs for corners and partition intersections.
- Plates — one bottom plate and (usually) two top plates over the wall length.
- Openings — adds king and jack studs, headers, cripples, and sills for each door and window.
Worked example
A 20-ft wall at 16 in on center: 20 ft = 240 in ÷ 16 + 1 = 16 studs, before adding corners and opening framing. Plate stock = 3 × 20 = 60 linear ft.

How does it count studs?
Wall length divided by the on-center spacing plus one, then it adds the extra studs needed at corners, partition tees, and around each opening.
16 or 24 inch on center?
